Multiple Income Generation Activities for SHGs Developing model for Poverty Alleviation

Introduction

 Group approach of transfer of technology adopted by Agricultural Science Foundation (ASF) has started giving dividends in the form of improved socio-economic conditions of the targeted participants.  Organisation of the women in to Self Help Groups, building their capacity for sustenance and making suitable technical interventions for livelihood improvement has been the priority area of ASF programmes.  One of the such group is Ganesh Landless Women Self Help Group of Hulkoti village wherein number of interventions are made by ASF to enhance the livelihood options of the poor families.  Participatory impact assessment of interventions of ASF for Ganesh SHG was carried out to assess the outcome and impact.

Interventions of Resources for Ganesh SHG

  • Awareness meeting on concept of Self Help Group conducted
  • Three meetings conducted before organizing them into SHG
  • Capacity building training of 2 days duration on SHG concept for all the ten members.
  • Facilitation of writing accounts of SHGs for 1 year
  • Livelihood Planning for the group

  • Exposure visits: Exposure visit to Thursday bazaar at Dharwad and Yadwad village (adopted village of UAS, Dharwad) to study the marketing of SHG products and food processing activities.
  • Inputs Provided to the SHG
  • Vegetable seeds like tomato, brinjal, chilli, bitroot and seedlings of papaya, citrus, curry leaf were given to SHGs to establish kitchen garden.
  • SHG Visit by ASF Scientists
  • ASF scientists visited 8-10 times for one year
  • Detailed training programme with hands on experience on goat rearing, buffaloe rearing and kitchen garden was organized to SHG members
